What is Lyocell?

Lyocell is a sustainable, plant-based fiber made from cellulose derived primarily from wood pulp. Officially recognized by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in April 1996 as a distinct fiber category, lyocell was previously grouped under the generic term "rayon." Unlike traditional rayon, lyocell is machine washable, resists shrinking and wrinkling, and is easier to care for.

One of the most well-known branded forms of lyocell is TENCEL™, known for its soft feel, smooth drape, excellent absorbency, and environmentally responsible manufacturing process. TENCEL™ lyocell fabrics are versatile — used in everything from denim and dress shirts to activewear and suiting — and can mimic the textures of cotton, silk, or wool.

Technically advanced, lyocell excels in areas such as:

• Color vibrancy (readily accepts dye)
• Durability, even after repeated washing
• Breathability and moisture management

In textile innovation, studies show that cotton-lyocell blends — especially when siro spun and woven in different patterns like plain, twill, and satin — offer superior tear strength compared to traditional ring-spun cotton fabrics.
